Action adventure movies may be related to the old swashbuckling movies, but more closely identify to mid-century 'event' films, such as spectacular historicals like Gone With The Wind, (1938) set in the American Civil War, or Ben Hur, (1959) a biblical Roman epic, or war action movies such as Twelve O'Clock High (1949).
1980s versions saw martial arts titles finding success as home video entertainment rather than box office blockbuster, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme 'the Muscles from Brussels' and Steven Seagal, for example, and developing an audience for the action comedy martial arts of Jackie Chan. The continued popularity of this set of movies means that they are frequently shown on cable television and periodically re-issued in DVD format.
