The LP record was invented in 1948 by Peter Goldmark. In June of 1948, Columbia released the first 33 1/3 rpm LP record.

The Declining Popularity of the Vinyl Record

The LP remained one of the most popular and best selling formats for recorded music until the 1980s, but sales of LPs dropped dramatically between 1980 and 1983. In 1980, 322.8 million LPs were sold, but by 1983, that number had dropped to 35 million. In 1985, 26 percent of recorded music was shipped in LP format, while cassettes accounted for 52 percent. By 1989, the percentage of LPs shipped fell even further, to a mere four percent.

Why Vinyl Records Have Historical Value

Although fans had switched from LPs to other formats, all of the recordings stored on LPs had not switched formats with them. Only 57 percent of music recorded between 1950-1964 has been reissued on CD. When one considers that statistic and also that the LP was the dominant recording medium of that era, it becomes clear that many important recordings simply do not exist in any other format. Because of the amount of music that is stored exclusively on LPs, their preservation and conservation is vital.
