Here are more suggestions to help ease photographers into new ownership.

  • Even if it the camera was purchased online or from a national retailer where the sales people aren't always so knowledgeable about the products they sell, every camera buyer should read the user's manual from cover to cover. If the photographer purchases a used camera, check to see if it comes with a manual. If not, go to the manufacturer's website and see if a manual is available.

  • After reading the manual, photographers should test their mastery of the information by taking test shots. Never plan to take photos of an important event without having first taken some practice shots under conditions that are the same or similar to the conditions of the upcoming event.

  • Photographers should give themselves time to get to know their camera. Digital cameras have lots of control buttons and menus.

Make a Cheat-Sheet Tag

  • Since digital cameras have many controls and menus, some photographers might find it helpful to write on a manila shipping tag a tip sheet of how to access some of the vital or more difficult to find buttons and menus. Then attach that tag to the shoulder strap of the camera.

  • If the photographer purchased the camera from a store that offers a free photography course with the purchase, take the course. And even before buying, consider making the purchase from a store that offers a free photography course. Also seach local libraries, community organizations and colleges and universities for camera courses that are free or fee – based.
Borrow or Buy Books and Go to Websites

  • Read photography books. The public libraries of large metropolitan areas have many books on photography. But before buying a book that hasn't been recommended, consider going online to amazon.com or any other website that has book reviews. The reviewers tell what topics the book covered and how helpful the information was to them

  • Don't overlook the interlibrary loan department of the library. If the local library doesn't have a book, get it from interlibrary loan. This way the photographer can read photography books from many libraries across the country and then decide whether he or she wants to purchase it.
