Destiny doesn’t show on a baby’s face, and at the moment of Rosa Parks’ birth in 1913 in Alabama, there was no sign that she would grow up to change history through her quiet strength.

The Early Life of Rosa Parks

On February 4, 1913, Rosa Louise McCauley was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, the first child and only daughter of James and Leona Edwards McCauley.

After her family moved to Pine Level, Alabama, young Rosa attended the one-room rural school there. At age 11, her mother, a teacher, enrolled her in the private Montgomery Industrial School for Girls (also known as Miss White's School for Girls). Next, she attended Alabama State Teacher's College High School. But when her grandmother became ill, she had to leave school to help take care of her.
