Anyone buying a computer or laptop will notice that they are priced according to their specifications, such as the type and size of their hard drive. These specifications may seem very confusing, but their function and importance can be explained without much difficulty.

The Processor

Whether single core, dual core, or quad core, the processor is the main chip that drives the computer. A more powerful processor will allow several programs to be run comfortably at the same time, or allow a single processing-intensive program to be run much faster. Laptops and desktops have slightly different processors due to the smaller size of a laptop's case; as a rule of thumb, desktop processors will be more powerful.

The Hard Drive

A computer hard drive is where all the computer's files are stored, including user data like photos or music, and files needed to run programs. Any information that is not saved to the hard drive will be lost as soon as the computer is switched off.
